Land Acknowledgement

I acknowledge that RAPT+HELD, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, sits on the traditional territory of many Indigenous nations, including the Anishinaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.

Today, this land is home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit and is also part of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant - an agreement between Indigenous nations to share and protect the land and its resources in peace.

In my practice of creating bespoke garments from reclaimed textiles, I see a beautiful parallel to the warp and weft that has woven together the complex fabric of this land's history. Each repurposed textile carries its own story, much like the rich narratives that have been passed down through generations on Turtle Island since time immemorial. By breathing new life into these materials - transforming them into pieces that can be worn, loved, and passed down through generations - I hope to honour the principles of stewardship and respect for our shared Earth that Indigenous peoples have practiced since the beginning.

I recognize the enduring presence and resilience of Indigenous communities and am DEEPLY committed to learning, unlearning, and supporting Indigenous sovereignty, 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, and the voices of all disenfranchised communities through both my personal actions and my creative practice. This commitment to sustainability is not simply about fashion - it's about recognizing our responsibility to protect and respect the planet in all that we do.
